Sixth Grade Book Reports

The Reader and Writer Ace

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
                                                     II Corinthians 10:5

Do not forget ---  A "word picture" is a picture your mind creates as you read a book or story.  (The concept or idea of a "word picture" is very important for developing abstract thinking skills which is so necessary for understanding the Bible).

Whenever you or your parents read a story, ask yourself ....
1. Can I see Gods providential care?
2. Why did God allow this to happen?

Along with the above questions, keep an eye out for the rascally villian in a book!  He is sure to pop up and try to entice the hero to do wrong or place snares before the hero.

Aw .... ma .... why do I have to ...

write the year the book was published on my book report?

8th Commandment:  Thou shalt not steal
Other writers published thoughts are protected by copyright.  This copyright law protects their work from theft.  You may use the written thoughts of others but you MUST give them credit.  As the Eighth Commandment states, we are not to steal which includes the intellectual property of others.  The copyright law is based upon God's Law-Word.

know the publisher and the state? That's not important !

For the scripture saith, Thou salt not muzzle the ox that readeth out the corn.  And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
I Timothy 5:18

In the future, the publisher and state may, indeed be very important to you. Is the publisher a humanist or a Christian?  The worldview of the publisher's will determine the titles they choose to publish.  This does not necessarily mean that a Christian should not purchase books which are produced and/or written from a non-Christian perspective.

Another reason to know the publisher is simply because you may enjoy the works they produce.

Remember what your parents have taught you in the past ? ...

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die .... ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
                                                                                  Genesis 3:4, 5

Remind your children that the above Scripture verse and others tell us the motive of the villain ... to be as our God and to replace our King.  Review vocabulary words like --- pagan, infidel, or humanist (as all these terms hold essentially the same meaning).

In this series of book reports we will will begin to make an assessment of the author and begin writing about the theme of the book.  (e.g., Is the author subjective or objective?).  Again, you will now have plenty of practice writing book reports.

"Book Mechanics" Check Off List

For better writing skills ...

Underline a book's title
NEVER start a sentence with --- But, Because, And, Or
Spell out numbers one through ten
Numbers twenty-one through ninety-nine are all hyphenated
DO NOT use slang.
DO NOT refer to yourself at all in the book report until the last paragraph. Then you may use personal pronouns like "I"
NEVER have a sentence following another one that starts with the same exact words !!!!

DO NOT use the same word or a version of the same word more than once in a sentence/paragraph

e.g., shows, showing, showed ---- FIND ANOTHER WORD !!!

Begin to use the Thesaurus --- we should no longer see you using the words sad/glad/mad/scared when evaluating (last paragraph) your book
DO NOT use contractions. Spell out all words.
REMEMBER --- All self words are hyphenated
USE your book reports to increase your vocabulary skills.  For each book report during this series look up 3-5 new words in the Thesaurus to replace words you commonly use.

Book Report Form and/or final book report double check ...

Fill out your Book Report Form as you read your book.  In this way, you will not forget anything.
Have you filled out and completed your Book Report Form out to the best of your ability?
READ your book report off of your Book Report Form. Does everything sound right?  If not, correct it NOW !
  Is everything spelled correctly?
Do you have proper punctuation at the end of your sentences?
Have you used commas and semi-colons correctly?
  Is your paper neat?
Do you have a Title Page for your final book report?
Did you underline the title of your book?

WELL DONE !
