Session #1 ... Monday ... Cleanliness is next to godliness

Memory Verse

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light:  Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God:  which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
                             1 Peter 2:9,10

A.  Cleanliness used physically
Outward purity ... Matthew 23:26 ... Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be  clean also.

B.  Cleanliness used spiritually

Men's nature ... Job 9:30,31 ... Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be  clean also.

Repentance ... Genesis 35:2 ... Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:

Regeneration ... Ezekiel 36:25 ... Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean:  from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

Sanctification ... Psalm 24:3,4 ... Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in His holy place?  He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

Glorification ... Revelation 19:8,14 ... And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white:  for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.  And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

C.  Cleanliness required of priests

Isaiah 52:11 ... Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD.

D.  Acceptability of worship

Hebrew 10:22 ... Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

E.  Inward cleanliness

Better than outward cleanliness ...  Matthew 23:25-28 ... Jesus ... Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.  Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful  outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

F.  Cleansing

Promise of cleansing ...  Jeremiah 33:8 ... And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against Me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against Me.

Need of cleansing ... Psalm 51:2 ... Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

Extent of cleansing ... Psalm 19:12 ... Who can understand his errors? cleanse Thou me from secret faults.

Command regarding cleansing ... 2 Corinthians 7:1 ... Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Means of cleansing ... 1 John 1:7,9 ... But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of  Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Perfection of cleansing ... Ephesians 5:26 ...  That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word

What does the Bible Say?

Session #2 ... Tuesday ... Appearances:  Real or Phoney?

Outward Appearances

Click here for Appearances PDF file

A.  Appearance can conceal

Deception ... Joshua 9:3-16 ... And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.  And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country:  now therefore make ye a league with us.  And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?  And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants.  And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?  And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God:  for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.  Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.  This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:  And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent:  and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.  And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.  And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live:  and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.  And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

Hypocrisy ... Matthew 23:25-28 ...

Rottenness ... Acts 12:21-23 ... And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.  And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory:  and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

Rebellion ... 2 Samuel 15:7-13 ... And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the LORD,  in Hebron.  For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.  And the king said unto him, Go in peace.  So he arose, and went to Hebron.  But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.  And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.  And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices.  And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.  And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.

False doctrine ... 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 ... For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works

B.  Appearance can be

Misunderstood ... Joshua 22:10-31

Mistaken ... 1 Samuel 1:12-18 ... And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.  Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard:  therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.  And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.  And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit:  I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.  Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial:  for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.  Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace:  and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.  And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight.  So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

Misleading ... 2 Corinthians 10:7-11 ... Do ye look on things after the outward appearance?  If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.  For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:  That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.  Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.

Misjudged ... John 7:24 ... Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment (Jesus)

Misinterpreted ... Matthew 11:16-19 ... But whereunto shall I liken this generation?  It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.  For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.  The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners.  But wisdom is justified of her children.

And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?  And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness:  and she returned unto her house.  And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

Of man ... Isaiah 44:13 ... The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.

All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.  Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women:  upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir.  Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house; So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty:  for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.

And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock.  And I took unto me two staves; the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock.  Three shepherds also I cut off in one month; and my soul lothed them, and their soul also abhorred me.  Then said I, I will not feed you:  that that dieth, let it die; and that that is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another.  And I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the people.  And it was broken in that day:  and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the LORD.  And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear.  So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.  And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter:  a goodly price that I was prised at of them.  And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.  Then I cut asunder mine other staff, even Bands, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.

What does the Bible Say?

Session #4 ... Thursday ... Modesty, is it becoming?

Modesty in dress

Click here for Modesty in Dress PDF file

A.  Women

Illustrated in Israel ... 1 Peter 3:3-5 ... Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own  husbands:

Lack of modesty and enticement ... 2 Samuel 11:2-5 ... And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house:  and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. And David sent and enquired after the woman.

B.  Men

Lack of modesty condemned ... Genesis 9:21-27 ... And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.  God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

Illustrated ... John 21:7 ... Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.

Manifested in conversation ... Mark 5:15 ... And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

What does the Bible Say?

Session #5 ... Friday ... Charming Beauty or Ostentatious Gaudiness?

Clothing — garments

Click here for Clothing PDF file

A.  Need of clothing

Cover nakedness ... Genesis 3:10,11 ... And he said, I heard Thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And He said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

Maintain modesty ... 1 Peter 3:1-5 ...

Keep warm ... 2 Timothy 4:13 ... The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.

Remove sorrow ... Esther 4:4 ... So Esther's maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.

B.  Unusual features regarding clothing

Lasted 40 years ... Deuteronomy 8:4 ... Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years

Torn into 12 pieces ... 1 Kings 11:29,30 ... And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field: And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces:

Borrowed from enemies ... Exodus 12:35 ... And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment

C.  Misc.

Judgments by clothing deceptive ... Luke 16:19-31 ... There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:  And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table:  moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom:  the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.  And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.  But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things:  but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.  And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they whichwould pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.  Thenhe said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:  For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.  Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.  And he said, Nay, father Abraham:  but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.  And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
