Learning to Multiply by 10s

 

Ten's Trick:  Add a zero to the number you are multiplying (10 x 2, for example, add a zero to the 2 to make it 20)

Learning the 10s
 10 x 0 = 0  10 x 7 = 70
 10 x 1 = 10  10 x 8 = 80
 10 x 2 = 20  10 x 9 = 90
 10 x 3 = 30  10 x 10 = 100
 10 x 4 = 40  10 x 11 = 110
 10 x 5 = 50  10 x 12 = 120
 10 x 6 = 60  

 

A fun way to get used to the 10s times table is to skip count ...

0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120

Be sure to practice skip counting backwards !

Learning to Divide by 10s

Do you remember that the ÷ sign means divide?  When we see the ÷ sign we say divided by.  Division is a type of reversed multiplication. It just takes a wee bit of practice. (NOTE: 0 divided by any number equals 0)

 

Be sure to practice skip counting as it helps us to divide quickly ...

 40 ÷ 10 = 4  110 ÷ 10 = 11

Did you notice that if you remove the zero from the number that is being divided you have your answer?  With 120 ÷ 10, the zero is removed from the 120 which leaves 12 and that is your answer !  Fun !

When one thing or a number of things is divided into ten equal parts, each part is called one tenth.  One tenth is written 1/10.  We can find 1/10 of any number by dividing the number by 10.
