Learning to Multiply by 3s

Learning the 3s
 3 x 0 = 0  3 x 7 = 21
 3 x 1 = 3  3 x 8 = 24
 3 x 2 = 6  3 x 9 = 27
 3 x 3 = 9  3 x 10 = 30
 3 x 4 = 12  3 x 11 = 33
 3 x 5 = 15  3 x 12 = 36
 3 x 6 = 18

A fun way to get used to the 3s time table is to skip count ...

0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36

Be sure to practice skip counting backwards !

36, 33, 30, 27, 24, 21, 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, 3, 0

Give the answers, reading across the graph

 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = ?  Seven 3s = ?  3 x 7 = ?

Give the answers, reading across the graph

 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = ?  Ten 3s = ?  3 x 10 = ?
 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = ?  Eleven 3s = ?  3 x 11 = ?
 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = ?  Twelve 3s = ?  3 x 12 = ?

Learning to Divide by 3s

Do you remember that the ÷ sign means divide?  When we see the ÷ sign we say divided by.  Division is a type of reversed multiplication. It just takes a wee bit of practice. (NOTE: 0 divided by any number equals 0)

Be sure to practice skip counting as it helps us to divide quickly ...

0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36

Be sure to practice skip counting backwards !

36, 33, 30, 27, 24, 21, 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, 3, 0

 3 ÷ 0 = 0  18 ÷ 3 = 6
 3 ÷ 1 = 3  21 ÷ 3 = 7
 3 ÷ 3 = 1  24 ÷ 3 = 8
 6 ÷ 3 = 2  27 ÷ 3 = 9
 9 ÷ 3 = 3  30 ÷ 3 = 10
 12 ÷ 3 = 4  33 ÷ 3 = 11
 15 ÷ 3 = 5  36 ÷ 3 = 12

 12 x 3 = 36  36 ÷ 12 = 3

When one thing or a number of things is divided into three equal parts, each part is called one third.  One third is written 1/3.  We can find 1/3 of any number by dividing the number by 3.

What is:
 1/3 of 3?  3 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 6?  6 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 9?  9 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 12?  12 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 15?  15 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 18?  18 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 21?  21 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 24?  24 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 27?  27 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 30?  30 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 33?  33 ÷ 3 = ?
 1/3 of 36?  36 ÷ 3 = ?

What is
 1/3 of 6 blocks?  1/3 of 12 tops?
 1/3 of 18 dollars?  1/3 of 3 horses?
 1/3 of 24 dolls?  1/3 of 33 cars?
 1/3 of 9 books?  1/3 of 15 park rides?
 1/3 of 30 cookies?  1/3 of 27 trucks?
 1/3 of 36 planes?  1/3 of 21 cents?

What is ...
(Hint: Do multiplication first then the addition)
 3 x 2 + 1 ?  3 x 8 + 2 ?
 3 x 4 + 5 ?  3 x 3 + 4 ?
 3 x 12 + 1 ?  3 x 5 + 1 ?
 3 x 1 + 4 ?  3 x 10 + 3 ?
 3 x 7 + 1 ?  3 x 11 + 2 ?
 3 x 10 + 1 ?  3 x 6 + 2 ?
 3 x 9 + 3 ?  3 x 0 + 5 ?

Three's trick:  To find out if a number can be divided by 3 evenly, add the sum. (e.g., 45 ÷ 3 will not have a remainder since 4 + 5 = 9 and 3 will go into 9 evenly)

Before you go on to the 4s times tables, be sure to ...

1)  Review your skip counting for all the times tables you have done so far
... frontwards and backwards

2) Have your daddy, mama, sister, or brother flash
you all the multiplication/division facts you have learned.
See how fast and accurate you can be !

3) complete the Multiplication Chart for
what you already know !
