Feed the Birds !

Items needed:

Pinecones
Lard (use a blend - see below)
Birdseed
Popcorn
String

Steps:

1.  Roll the pinecones in lard, then in birdseed or popcorn.

2.  Attach a string long enough so that the pinecone can hang from a tree branch.

3.  Find a tree that you can see easily; hang your feeder there and watch the birds come!

Alternatives:

1.  Use a blend instead of straight peanut butter or lard

2.  The forestry service recommends mixing cornmeal & lard (or melted suet or shortening) in with the peanut butter before applying to the pinecone.
Peanut butter alone may strangle smaller birds as they cannot get it off their beaks becoming glue.  Add just enough of each to stiffen the consistency; apply to the pinecone; roll in birdseed

3.  Let the mixture set overnight to harden and voila!

Internet Birds

Audobon Society
The Audobon Society provides a lot of information with respect to birds; however, the information must be taken with a grain of salt.  Since the Audubon Society is not a Christian organization, some of their facts tend to be a little confused or misinterpreted.

Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter
Photographs, songs, identification tips, maps, and life history information for North American birds. Also has a forum for commentary and discussion on bird identification.

The Great Backyard Birdcount
The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. A fantastic Web site including backyard birdcounts by citizen scientists, bird identification & bibliography with photos and wav files, and information on choosing and placing feeders and bird food.

All Things Bright And Beautiful
Listen
PDF File Worksheet

Refrain
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

Verse 1
Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
God made their glowing colors,
And made their tiny wings.

Refrain

Verse 2
The purple headed mountains,
The river running by,
The sunset and the morning
That brightens up the sky.

Refrain

[The following verse is omitted
from most hymnals]

Verse 3
The rich man in his castle,
The poor man at his gate,
He made them high or lowly,
And ordered their estate.

Refrain

Verse 4
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden:
God made them every one.

Refrain

Verse 5
The tall trees in the greenwood,
The meadows where we play,
The rushes by the water,
We gather every day.

Refrain

Verse 5
God gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.

Refrain
