Basics ...

Eyes need light to see.

Iris:  Gives eyes color and has muscles controlling the amount of light that enters your eye.

Pupil: Black circle in the eye is a hole in the iris.
  a)  in light the pupil is small
  B)  in dark the pupil is big

Optic Nerve:  This is the nerve at the end of your eye that sends messages of what you have seen to your brain.

Lens:  Takes a picture and puts it on the retina upside down.

The eye works like a camera.

Eyelids:  keeps dust and other objects out of your eyes

Eyelashes:  keeps dust out of your eyes

Tears:  Keeps your eyes moist and washes dust and dirt from your eyes.

Protection ...

Reading:  Light must come from above and behind you.

Never point pencils or sharp objects near your eyes or anybody else's eyes.

Eat proper food.  Vitamin A rich foods are carrots, liver, cheese, peas, eggs, and peaches.

Glasses:  If you wear glasses, wear them and be sure they are clean.

Games ...

Hot and Cold game ...
Agree on what should be hidden (a ball, a small toy, etc.)  One person takes the agreed upon item and hides it in the room while the others are out of the room or their eyes are shut.  After it is hidden, the others are called back into the room to try and find the object.  The leader will say either "hot" if the person is close to the item, or "cold" if they have moved away from the item until the object is found.

Staring Contest game ...
Have you ever had a staring contest with your mother or father or sister or brother?  The idea is to see who can look at the other person in the eye the longest without blinking. It is fun!  Try it!  Then, try it with a family pet!

I Spy game ...
I Spy is a fun game.  One person will say, "I spy something _______" giving the color of an object, but not telling what the object is.  The others must try to guess at what the object could be by looking around that person and asking, "Is it __________?"  The person that guesses the object gets to pick the next item.  If no one guesses the object, that person goes again!

Preserving and keeping it clean ! ...

Eyes are very important organs.  You only receive one pair of eyes that need to last your entire life !

Never ...

... Never put anything into your eyes
...
Never touch your eyes
...
Never hit anyone on or about the eyes with anything
...
Never read or look at a book in poor light.  When you read, make SURE you have enough light over your shoulder
...
Never look directly at the sun
...
Never sit close to a television set while watching movies or shows as it will harm your eyes.  You should never be closer than 6 feet to a television screen!

If you get something in your eyes, be sure to tell your parents and they will help you wash it out of your eye.

JEEPERS CREEPERS
(1938)
Al Donohue/Johnny Mercer

Jeepers, creepers, where'd ya get those peepers,
jeepers, creepers, where'd ya get those eyes?
Gosh all, git up, how'd they get so lit up,
gosh all, git up, how'd they get that size?
Golly gee! When you turn those heaters on
woe is me, got to put my cheaters on.
Jeepers, creepers, where'd ya get those peepers?
Oh, those weepers, how they hypnotize!
Where'd ya get those eyes?

cheaters = sunglasses
