8)  When the 4th of July comes around, go and listen to the firecrackers and fireworks.  How do they sound?

Basics ...

Sound is made by something that vibrates (moves rapidly back and forth)

Sound Waves:  These are like waves at a beach.  Sound vibrations travel through the air.

God designed the ear like a cup to catch sound waves and direct them to the brain.

Outer Ear: like a cup to catch waves
Auditory Canal:  This is a little tube.
  Ear Drum:
The ear drum is at the end of the audiotyr canal.  A thin piece of trightly stretched skin (like a drum) separates the outer ear from the middle ear. Sounds strike the ear drum and the vibration movement carries it to the middle ear.

Middle Ear: contains the hammer, anvil, and stirrup
The hammer, anvil, and stirrup are three little bones that make the vibration stronger.

Inner Ear: contains the cochlea
The cochlea is filled with a liquid which carries vibrations to the auditory nerve.

Auditory Nerve takes the sound message to the brain.

Protection ...

Outer Ear Protection:

Skull protects the ears.

Auditory Canal is lined with tiny hairs and glands to make wax.  The hairs and wax stop dust and small insects getting into your middle ear.
