A brief note about the vocabulary section in the above worksheets ...
Attempt to help your student discover the meaning of the word, if they do not know it, by the context it is used in; however, if they are totally baffled, have them look it up in a dictionary. Do not drag this process out. An investment in a good dictionary need not be all that expensive. One suggestion is to go to a used bookstore and look for a dictionary from the 1920s-1940s (if possible, try to pick up a thesauraus from this timeframe as well). It is most important for your student to become very familiar with a dictionary so that they are NOT intimidated in later years and will already have developed the speed and quickness for locating a word.
Flashcards ... another idea is to have your student write the vocabulary word in one color marker on an index card and write a 1-2 word definition of the word on the back. These flashcards can be used to not only learn the meaning of the word (they make great pop quizzes), but are helpful for your student in learning how to alphabetize. Believe it or not, many have lost this most basic skill. Make sure your student feels confident and comfortable with it.
Concentration ... take several of the above flashcards and either have the vocabulary word or the definition face upwards. Have each person take turns in identifying either the vocabulary word based on the definition or the definition based on the vocabulary word.
