Twelve Days of Christmas History
Print it! — Twelve Days of Christmas PDF File

Gene Newman, a dear friend and homeschooling dad of ten children from Michigan, forwarded this information. Thought y'all would be interested.

Christmas is a season of the Christian Year that lasts for the twelve days beginning December 25 and lasting until January 6 — the Day of Epiphany, when the church celebrates the revelation of Christ as the Light of the world and recalls the journey of the Magi.

From 1558 until 1829 Roman Catholics in England were not allowed to practice their faith openly.  During that era someone wrote The Twelve Days of Christmas as a kind of secret catechism that could be sung in public without the risk of persecution.  The song has two levels of interpretation:  the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the church.  Each element in the carol is a code word for a religious reality.

The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ.

The two turtledoves are the older and newer testaments. (Hebrews 8:6-13)

Three French hens stand for faith, hope and love. (1 Corinthians 13:13; 1 Thess. 5:8)

The four calling birds are the four Gospels.

The five gold rings recall the Torah (Law), the first five books of the older testament.

The six geese a-laying stand for the six days of creation. (Genesis 1)

Seven swans a-swimming represent the sevenfold gifts of the Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:8-10)

The eight maids a-milking are the eight beatitudes. (Matthew 5:3:-11)

Nine ladies dancing? These are the nine fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23).

The ten lords a-leaping are the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20; Deuteronomy 5:6-21).

Eleven pipers piping stand for the eleven faithful disciples.

Twelve drummers drumming symbolize the 12 points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

The Holly and the Ivy
Listen

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown:
O, the rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a blossom,
As white as lily flow'r,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To be our dear Saviour: Refrain

The holly bears a berry,
As red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To do poor sinners good: Refrain

The holly bears a prickle,
As sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
On Christmas Day in the morn: Refrain

The holly bears a bark,
As bitter as the gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
For to redeem us all: Refrain

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown:  Refrain

Do You Hear What I Hear?
Listen

Do You Hear What I Hear?
Said the night wind to the little lamb,
"Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite,
With a tail as big as a kite."

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
"Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear?
A song, a song high above the trees
With a voice as big as the the sea,
With a voice as big as the the sea."

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
"Do you know what I know?
In your palace warm, mighty king,
Do you know what I know?
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold—
Let us bring him silver and gold,
Let us bring him silver and gold."

Said the king to the people everywhere,
"Listen to what I say!
Pray for peace, people, everywhere,
Listen to what I say!
The Child, the Child sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light,
He will bring us goodness and light."

Ding dong! merrily on high,
In heav'n the bells are ringing:
Ding dong! verily the sky
Is riv'n with angel singing.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!

E'en so here below, below,
Let steeple bells be swungen,
And "Io, io, io!"
By priest and people sungen.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!

Pray you, dutifully prime
Your matin chime, ye ringers;
May you beautifully rime
Your evetime song, ye singers.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!

I Saw Three Ships A-Sailing
Listen

AS I sat under a sycamore tree,
—A sycamore tree, a sycamore tree,
I looked me out upon the sea
On Christ’s Sunday at morn.

I saw three ships a-sailing there,
—A-sailing there, a-sailing there,
Jesu, Mary and Joseph they bare
On Christ’s Sunday at morn.

Joseph did whistle and Mary did sing,
—Mary did sing, Mary did sing,
And all the bells on earth did ring
For joy our Lord was born.

O they sail’d in to Bethlehem!
—To Bethlehem, to Bethlehem;
Saint Michael was the sterésman,
Saint John sat in the horn.

And all the bells on earth did ring
—On earth did ring, on earth did ring:
‘Welcome be thou Heaven’s King,
On Christ’s Sunday at morn!’

Alternate Lyrics

I saw three ships a-sailing,
A-sailing on the sea,
The first her masts were silver,
Her hull was ivory.

The snows came drifting softly,
And lined her white as wool;
Oh, Jesus, Son of Mary,
Thy Cradle beautiful !

I saw three ships a-sailing,
The next was red as blood,
Her decks shone like a ruby,
Encrimsoned all her wood.

Her main-mast stood up lonely,
A lonely Cross and stark.
Oh, Jesus, Son of Mary,
Bring all men to that ark !

I saw three ships a-sailing.
The third for cargo bore
The souls of men redeemed,
That shall be slaves no more.

The lost beloved faces,
I saw them glad and free.
Oh, Jesus, Son of Mary,
When wilt thou come for me ?

Alternate Lyrics

I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas day, on Christmas day,
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas day in the morning.

And what was in those ships all three,
On Christmas day, on Christmas day,
And what was in those ships all three,
On Christmas day in the morning ?

Our Saviour, Christ, and His Lady,
On Christmas day, on Christmas day,
Our Saviour, Christ, and His Lady,
On Christmas day in the morning.

And all the bells on earth shall ring
On Christmas day, on Christmas day,
And all the bells on earth shall ring
On Christmas day in the morning.

And all the angels in Heaven shall sing
On Christmas day, on Christmas day,
And all the angels in Heaven shall sing
On Christmas day in the morning.

And let us all rejoice and sing
On Christmas day, on Christmas day,
And let us all rejoice and sing
On Christmas day in the morning.
On Christmas day in the morning.
La da la la la la la la ...

I Wonder As I Wander
Listen

I wonder as I wander
Out under the sky
How Jesus the Savior
Did come to die
To save lowly people
Like you and like I
I wonder as I wander
Out under the sky

When Jesus was born
It was in a cow's stall
With shepherds and wise men
And angels and all
The blessings of Christmas
From heaven did fall
And the weary world woke
To the Savior's call

Fum, Fum, Fum

Listen

On this joyful Christmas Day
Sing fum, fum, fum
On this joyful Christmas Day
Sing fum, fum, fum
For a blessed Babe was born
Upon this day at the break of morn
In a manger poor and lowly
Lay the Son of God most holy
Fum, Fum, Fum!

Thanks to God for holidays
Sing fum, fum, fum
Now we all our voices raise
And sing a song of grateful praise
Celebrate in song and story
All the wonders of His glory
Fum, fum, fum
