What is a Groundhog?
According to the Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary © 1975 a ground hog is a woodchuck. The same dictionary says that a woodchuck is a grizzled thickset marmot (Marmota monax) of the northeastern U.S. and Canada which is also called a groundhog. (Folk etymology fr. Ojibwa otchig fisher, marten, or Cree otecheck).
This fun, special day is based on American folk lore. If the groundhog leaves his home where he has been hibernating and does not see his shadow, he will remain above ground. However, if the groundhog sees his shadow, he'll return to hibernation and there will be six more weeks of cold weather. This American folk lore is based on an old Scottish couplet: "If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, there'll be two winters in the year."
hmmmmm ..... I wonder if this special day resulted from cabin fever?
;)
The Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary © 1975 defines
cabin fever as "extreme irritability and restlessness resulting
from boredom of living in a remote region alone or with only a
few companions: also: the same emotions resulting
from living in a small enclosed space."
