Patriotic Songs
"Give 'em Watts, boys, give 'em Watts!" In an attack upon Springfield when the patriots' wadding gave out, Rev. James Caldwell (of Huguenot descent) ran into the Presbyterian church returning with his arms and pockets crammed full with Watts' Psalms and Hymns saying, "Now, boys, give them Watts!" The British offered large rewards for the capture of Rev. Caldwell, but to no avail. Therefore, the British burned his church, shot his wife while she was in the midst of their nine children, dragged her body into the street, and burned his home and out buildings. Sing along with War of Independence patriots from the Watts' Psalms and Hymns below ... |

Behold the islands with
their kings, There Persia, glorious to
behold, To Him shall endless prayer
be made, People and realms of every
tongue Blessings abound wherever
He reigns; Where He displays His healing
power, Let every creature rise
and bring Great God, whose universal
sway The scepter well becomes
His hands; With power He vindicates
the just, As rain on meadows newly
mown, The heathen lands, that
lie beneath The saints shall flourish
in His days, |

The Law discovers guilt
and sin What curses doth the Law
denounce My soul, no more attempt
to draw |

|
Under the shadow of Thy
throne Before the hills in order
stood, Thy Word commands our flesh
to dust, A thousand ages in Thy sight The busy tribes of flesh
and blood, Time, like an ever rolling
stream, Like flowery fields the
nations stand Our God, our help in ages
past, |
|
Say to the nations, Jesus
reigns, Let heavn proclaim
the joyful day; Let an unusual joy surprise Behold, He comesHe
comes to bless But when His voice shall
raise the dead, |

|
Today He rose and left the
dead, Hosanna to thanointed
King, Blest be the Lord, Who comes
to men Hosanna in the highest strains |

|
Forbid it, Lord, that I
should boast, See from His head, His hands,
His feet, His dying crimson, like
a robe, Were the whole realm of
nature mine, |

|
I sing the goodness of the
Lord, who filled the earth with food, Theres not a plant
or flower below, but makes Thy glories known, |

|
Verse 2 Verse 3 Verse 4 Verse 5 Verse 6 |

|
When once it enters to the
mind, Tis, like the sun,
a heavnly light The men that keep Thy law
with care, Thy precepts make me truly
wise: The starry heavns
Thy rule obey, But still Thy law and Gospel,
Lord, Thy Word is everlasting
truth; |

|
The rolling sun, the changing
light, Sun, moon, and stars convey
Thy praise Nor shall Thy spreading
Gospel rest Great Sun of Righteousness,
arise, Thy noblest wonders here
we view |
