Valentine's
Day Cards ![]()
Purpose:
Valentine's Day cards
have become an important way to let good friends, family, and
spouses know that you love, respect, and admire them. Cards
have been known to be whimsical, humorous, charming, ornate, and
sensitive.
Background:
Valentine's Day cards
are credited to Charles, Duke of Orleans, who was imprisoned in
1415 because he wrote romantic verses to his wife. In the
16th century, St. Francis de Sales became very concerned about
the over emphasis on Valentine's Day cards and preached to his
flock against them. The 1700s saw fancy cards and by the
Victorian era, Valentine's Day cards became quite ornate.
Next to actual cards sent in the USA, Christmas cards are followed
by Valentine's Day cards.
Cupid

As far as most scholars know, Cupid can be credited to ancient Greece and later to Rome. Cupid was a mischievous god that would shoot arrows into his victims resulting in each falling helplessly in love. He was known as Eros the young son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. For Rome, he was Cupid, and his mother Venus.
