Schmitty Had Massive Heart Attack late Mother's Day

Postby Beverly » Mon May 11, 2009 7:39 am

Please keep my husband, Douglas, in prayer.

Katie & I went to bed last night. About 2-3 minutes after my head hits the pillow, I am usually asleep.

I knew Schmitty & Rachel were talking and having a "father / daughter" moment.

Rachel was concerned about how her father looked and began to ask him questions and plugging in his responses on the internet. (Remember, Katie & I were fast asleep in bed while this was happening.) In any event, that is when Rachel realized her father was having a heart attack and rushed him out the door in his PJs to our local hospital.

Rachel was driving very quickly to Lock Haven Hospital and, Schmitty, with his usual sense of humor said, "Rachel, slow down! Are you trying to give me a heart attack?" :P

When at the hospital, they gave him several medications and morphine to dull the pain. He was life flighted to Danville hospital ... heart attack.

Rachel called home from ER. I groggily answered the phone, learned what was happening, got Katie up, got dressed, and made a few phone calls (my big brother, the church, Lock Haven Hospital Extended Care Unit, etc. & let them know what was happening.)

Geisinger, in Danville, is over an hour away. We got there much sooner than that as Rachel must have given Katie's car wings. We did not get home until around 4:00 AM.

He'll have a heart cath at noon today.

If possible and if you think of it, could you keep him in prayer?

Thanks
~Beverly~

Was at the hospital all day. Schmitty's heart cath went well. The doctor said Douglas was very fortunate & that his heart has begun to heal. They're struggling keeping his blood pressure w/in healthy parameters. I would've stayed longer, but I think he needed to sleep. Dave Baker, a dear family friend, came to see Douglas. He was so excited! Dave's visit was a definite morale boost for Schmitty AND the entire family.

I dunno when he'll be discharged from Geisinger Medical Center (Danville, PA)

This is the procedure Schmitty had ...

Coronary Interventional Procedures (Angioplasty/Stent)

    * Angioplasty (PTCA) is a medical procedure in which a balloon is used to open narrowed or blocked coronary arteries (blood vessels of the heart).... Read More

    * A stent is a flexible coil of mesh that is inserted into a patient's coronary artery to keep that artery open so that blood can pass through it easily. A stent is placed as part of a balloon angioplasty procedure.

They took out Schmitty's sheath Monday around 10:30 PM or 11:00 PM (he couldn't remember).

They moved Schmitty out of Cardiac ICU around 5:00 PM EST yesterday. He's still on the cardiac unit, but he's much more stable than he was!

Thank You Lord!

They also took out one of his two IVs yesterday. They left one in "just in case" according to the nurse.

He is hoping to be discharged Wednesday, but I think it's more likely he'll be discharged Thursday. Please keep him in prayer

I tried to return to work yesterday, but didn't realize how stressed out I was cuz when I got to my office, I had to shut the door and just cry. I suspect the reason was cuz I no longer had to be "the strong one" for my girls who needed to have some sense of normalcy.

I cannot imagine how hard this must be for Katie & Rachel. They have never really seen anyone hooked up to any machines before and here is their father with oxygen at his nose, two IVs going strong, several monitors, in a hospital gown, and more. It must be so difficult for them. They are beginning to talk about how shocked they are over his appearance, but also how they are grateful for his sense of humor.

If ya think about it, please keep him in prayer. Thanks!

Schmitty kept pushing to get out of the hospital and, so, the girls & I picked him up at 5:00 PM yesterday and brought him home.

Frankly, I think he is less stressed out being at home and can get a good night's rest.

Please continue to keep him in prayer!

Schmitty's blood pressure is still unstable. The other day when we went to get his heart medicine at the pharmacy, I had him sit down. After about 10-15 minutes of sitting, I had him take his blood pressure (it's free there) and it was sky high ...
